ST. LOUIS, MO – A barge accident occurred on the Mississippi River when a barge hit the Martin Luther King Bridge on Monday, November 29th. The accident occurred at approximately 2:10 am. No injuries were reported at the time of the incident.
“The barge was coming down through St. Louis and struck the bridge. Four barges broke loose but were quickly caught,” Joel Coffman, of the U.S. Coast Guard, said.
A bridge pier was struck, but the bridge itself did not suffer significant damage and remained open for the morning commute.
Tim Krumm, an engineer with the Illinois Department of Transportation, said: “I went out and took a look, and there’s no damage to the bridge.”
The barge was operated by Marquette Transportation.
The accident remains under investigation.
