RUSSELL, KY. — The Ironton and Russell police departments closed the Ironton-Russell Bridge immediately after a barge struck the bridge on Saturday, Dec. 29.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the barge accident occurred at around 10:30 p.m. Saturday evening involving a barge owned by Superior Marine. The media reported that the Ohio Department of Transportation has since put up barricades to deter motorists.

According to the Greenup County KY. 911 Dispatch, an inspector is expected to come out Monday, Dec. 31, to examine the 90-year-old bridge which will remain closed at least until that time.
The U.S. Coast Guard out of Huntington cleared the barge to leave the scene, according to a report provided Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
